# Screen Observation

> Use consent-based screen observation when granular task behaviour cannot be captured reliably through interviews alone.

Screen observation can complement interviews by showing the detailed actions, system switching and manual steps that participants may forget to describe.

## When it is useful

Use it for workflows where:

* the task is highly repetitive or granular;
* users switch frequently between systems;
* manual copying or lookup work is suspected;
* the difference between policy and actual execution matters;
* an interview cannot capture the task accurately enough.

## When not to use it

Avoid it when:

* the task involves highly sensitive information that cannot be appropriately controlled;
* employee concern would outweigh the diagnostic value;
* the process can already be understood from other evidence;
* local legal, privacy or works-council requirements make it inappropriate without further review.

## Participant framing

> We are observing the workflow to understand the steps and systems involved, not to monitor your personal productivity. The objective is to identify process friction that interviews may not capture at task level.

## Combine evidence

Screen observation is strongest when interpreted alongside interview evidence. The screen may show what happened; the participant explains why.
